Artist Statement
I began the art of throwing pottery
on the potter’s wheel in 1976. I have relished the
technical challenge of pushing the clay to its limits to
create large, buoyant thin walled pieces. The form serves
as the canvas for a very unique copper matt raku glaze.
The raku firing process is performed outside with a liquid
propane fired kiln. The pieces while red hot are the
pulled from the kiln and placed in a bed of sand and
covered with combustible materials. This process causes
the glaze to react in the hot oxygen depleted
environment. This reaction causes the formation of colors
all over the piece, which are captured as the piece cools
down. Each piece is unique in form and appearance.
